Emirates

Emirates runs one of the most structured direct-entry recruitment processes in the industry. The pipeline is fully managed in-house by Emirates Flight Training and recruitment teams based in Dubai. The process typically runs over 4–8 weeks from initial application to offer — longer during high-volume periods. Emirates recruits on a rolling basis year-round; there is no fixed annual cycle.

Selection process

1
Online application
Submit via emiratesgroupcareers.com/pilots. The form captures your total time, recency on type, aircraft type, current licence, and medical. Applications are screened against published minimum requirements — 7,000+ TT for direct-entry Captain (Airbus, PIC command) and 2,000+ TT for First Officer. Emirates also requires a minimum of 150 hours on type in the past 12 months. Ensure your logbook hours are accurate; discrepancies discovered later are disqualifying.
2
Initial screening / HR interview
If your profile clears the automated screen, you will receive a video or phone interview with an HR recruiter. This is primarily a background and motivation interview — why Emirates, why now, previous operator experience. No technical questions at this stage.
3
Aptitude testing — PILAPT
Emirates uses PILAPT (Pilot Aptitude Testing System) for all initial selections. The PILAPT battery includes multi-tasking, tracking, hand-eye coordination, spatial awareness, and instrument interpretation subtests. Tests are timed and progressively difficult. PILAPT is administered online under supervision or at an assessment centre in Dubai. Pass rates are not published but the test is known to be demanding — candidates should familiarise themselves with the format through official PILAPT practice resources.
4
Assessment centre — Dubai
Candidates who pass PILAPT are invited to a two-day assessment centre at Emirates HQ, Dubai. This includes a group exercise, individual presentation (typically 5 minutes on a topic given same day), and a one-on-one technical and behavioural interview with two senior Emirates line pilots. CRM and decision-making scenarios are frequently used. Dress is business formal.
5
Simulator assessment
A sim check on the type you are applying for (typically B777 or A380 for Captain applicants). The sim check is not a full proficiency check — it tests your raw handling, scan pattern, basic instrument flying, and response to an asymmetric or abnormal situation. It is conducted in an Emirates full-flight simulator at the Emirates training facility in Dubai. Assessors are looking for discipline and crew communication, not perfection.
6
Medical — Emirates Airline Medical Centre
Full Class 1 equivalent medical at the Emirates Airline Medical Centre, Al Garhoud. This includes ECG, audiogram, ophthalmology, and routine blood work. Existing EASA or GCAA Class 1 is not a substitute — Emirates requires their own assessment.
7
Reference checks and offer
References are taken from your current or most recent employer. Offer letters are typically issued within 2–4 weeks of a successful sim check. Emirates provides accommodation in a three or four bedroom villa within a gated community exclusively for Emirates employees, with utilities included (valued at AED 290,000 / USD 80,000 annually). Pilots who prefer to make their own property arrangements receive an equivalent accommodation allowance.

Qatar Airways

Qatar Airways runs a centralised recruitment process through its Doha headquarters, with some assessment activity at international roadshows. The process is primarily driven by the Qatar Airways Training department. Recruitment cycles typically align with network expansion — Qatar has expanded aggressively since 2022 and recruits across widebody and narrowbody fleets. Joining lead times are longer than many carriers due to QCAA licence validation requirements.

Selection process

1
Online application
Submit via careers.qatarairways.com. Include total time, type-rated aircraft, and current licence. For direct-entry Captains, Qatar typically requires a minimum of 6,000 hours total on multi-crew, multi-engine commercial jet aircraft (MTOW ≥ 50,000 kg), with at least 1,500–2,000 hours PIC on large widebody aircraft. For type-rated First Officers, a minimum of 1,500 hours on multi-crew jet aircraft with a current LPC and currency on type within the past 12–18 months is required. Non-type-rated First Officer candidates typically need a minimum of 1,000 total hours on multi-crew, multi-engine EFIS jets with an MTOW of 20,000 kg or higher. All licences must be convertible to QCAA (Qatar) standard.
2
Computer-based aptitude testing
Qatar uses a computer-based test battery that includes multi-tasking, psychomotor, spatial reasoning, and English language comprehension sections. The battery is administered either at the Doha training centre or at an international assessment roadshow. Some candidates report elements similar to the DLR (German Aerospace Centre) battery used by Lufthansa.
3
Technical and HR interview
A structured interview with a Qatar Airways Captain and an HR representative. Technical questions cover aircraft systems, performance, meteorology, airlaw (ICAO), and operations at type. The HR component covers motivation, career history, and situational/behavioural questions using the STAR (Situation, Task, Action, Result) format.
4
Simulator check — Doha
Conducted at the Qatar Airways Training Academy, Hamad International Airport. The sim check is on the type applied for (A350, B777, A320 etc.). Format includes: departure, cruise, arrival, one or two abnormals (typically an engine failure approach or pressurisation loss), and a CAT III approach if type-rated. Standard is higher than many carriers — expect assessors to be thorough.
5
Medical — QCAA approved facility
Full aviation medical at a QCAA-approved facility. Existing EASA Class 1 medical must be validated separately through the QCAA process. Plan for this to take several weeks.
6
Offer and QCAA licence validation
Conditional offer issued after successful sim check. QCAA validation of your EASA/FAA licence adds 4–12 weeks. Qatar typically manages this process on your behalf but you must supply original documents including logbooks for verification.

Ryanair

Ryanair is Europe's largest airline by passenger numbers and one of the largest employers of pilots in the world. Direct-entry recruitment for experienced Captains and type-rated First Officers runs continuously. The process is fast by European standards — Ryanair needs volume and the pipeline is efficient.

Selection process

1
Online application
Apply via careers.ryanair.com. Create one profile only — duplicate profiles result in disqualification. CVs are screened against minimum requirements (see Min hours below). First Officers with fewer than 1,000 hours on a CS-25 jet should apply through the Future Flyer Academy cadet pathway instead. Upload all required documents before applying — applications are not progressed until all documentation is complete.
2
Online aptitude testing — Cut-e
Ryanair uses Cut-e (now part of Aon) for initial online aptitude screening. Tests include: logical reasoning (scales; deductive), spatial visualisation, and a pilot-specific multi-tasking subtest. Tests are timed, adaptive, and conducted unsupervised online. Pass/fail benchmarks are not published. Cut-e tests are standardised — you can familiarise yourself with the format via the official Aon practice portal at aon.com.
3
Technical interview
Video or in-person interview with a Ryanair Training Captain. Technical questions are B737-focused: systems, performance, fuel policy, weather minima, and operations. Expect questions on Ryanair's SOPs even before joining — the expectation is that you know B737 operations well.
4
Simulator assessment — Dublin
B737 FFS at Ryanair's Dublin training facility. Format: engine-running pushback, taxi, departure, en-route, arrival, approach (typically ILS), go-around, asymmetric approach and landing. Assessed on raw handling, scan, CRM, and abnormal procedure execution. Approximately 1 hour in the sim.
5
Offer and base selection
Conditional offers are issued within days of a successful sim check — Ryanair does not delay. Base preference is submitted during the process; allocation depends on vacancies. Lufthansa

Lufthansa is Germany's flag carrier and the largest airline in Europe by revenue. Direct-entry Captain recruitment is rare — Lufthansa strongly prefers internal progression from Lufthansa Group first officers. First Officer recruitment for direct-entry type-rated candidates runs more frequently, alongside the European Flight Academy (EFA) cadet intake. The Lufthansa assessment process uses the DLR (Deutsches Zentrum für Luft- und Raumfahrt — German Aerospace Centre) battery and is widely regarded as one of the most rigorous in the industry. The DLR test has a pass rate of approximately 3–5% for the general population.

Selection process

1
Online application
Apply via lufthansagroup.com/careers. Direct-entry positions are occasionally advertised for type-rated First Officers (A320, B747, A350). Specify your type rating and total hours accurately. Lufthansa screens applications against type rating and total time minima.
2
DLR aptitude test — Hamburg or Zurich
The DLR (German Aerospace Centre) pilot aptitude test is conducted at the DLR facility in Hamburg (or sometimes Zurich for SWISS selection). This is a full-day assessment covering: cognitive ability (verbal, numerical, abstract), psychomotor ability (hand-eye coordination, multi-limb coordination), spatial orientation, working memory, reaction time, and a structured psychological interview. This is not a test you can significantly train for in the short term — it measures deep cognitive and psychomotor ability. Register independently at dlr.de — Lufthansa will direct you there after application screening.
3
Group selection — Hamburg
Candidates who pass the DLR test are invited to a group selection day at Lufthansa's recruitment centre in Hamburg. This includes a group exercise (observed for CRM behaviours), an individual presentation, and English language assessment.
4
Technical and personal interview
A structured technical interview with two Lufthansa Training Captains. Covers aircraft systems (at type), performance, meteorology, and ICAO airlaw. The personal interview is conducted by an HR specialist and covers career history, motivation, and behavioural competencies. Lufthansa uses a structured scoring matrix for both.
5
Simulator check
At Lufthansa Aviation Training (LAT) in Frankfurt or Munich. Type-specific (typically A320 for FO candidates). Standard Lufthansa OPC/LPC format: departure, en-route, approach and landing, one abnormal, go-around. Lufthansa's check standard is high — expect a thorough assessment of systems knowledge and crew communication.
6
Medical — Lufthansa AeroMedical Centre
Full Class 1 medical at the Lufthansa AeroMedical Centre, Frankfurt or Munich. Results are reviewed by Lufthansa's own aviation medical team.
7
Offer and base assignment
Final offer letter issued after successful medical clearance. New FOs typically join on an A320 type rating at Frankfurt or Munich. Base transfer after seniority is built.
