About the role

Air Senegal is the current national flag carrier of Senegal, founded in 2016.

Predecessors and Timeline
Stable national airline since its independence in 1960, leading to four successive carriers:

Air Sénégal (1971–2001): Established originally in 1971 as a regional domestic carrier.
Air Sénégal International (2001–2009): Restructured when Royal Air Maroc acquired a 51% majority stake. It ran into financial trouble and mounting losses by 2006, leading the Senegalese government to increase its stake before the joint venture ended in bankruptcy around 2009.
Senegal Airlines (2011–2016): Launched in January 2011 with private and state backing. It accumulated over 100 billion CFA francs in debt and ceased operations in April 2016.
Air Senegal (2016–Present): Created by the government in 2016 via the Caisse des Dépôts et Consignation du Sénégal. It received its Air Operator's Certificate in April 2018 and launched commercial flights on May 14, 2018, using ATR 72-600 aircraft.
