How many pilots the world will need over the next 5, 10, 20 and 30 years — with the aircraft orders and fleet forecasts behind those numbers. Captain demand and First Officer demand, widebody versus narrowbody, and the airline, cargo/freighter and business-aviation segments. Every figure is paraphrased from a named primary forecast — Boeing, Airbus, CAE, IATA, Honeywell and Oliver Wyman — with sources listed in full at the foot of the page.
The manufacturers and consultancies publish on different scopes and horizons, so their headline numbers are not directly interchangeable. Boeing's and Airbus's pilot forecasts are 20-year and count commercial aviation only; CAE's is a 10-year figure that includes business aviation; IATA forecasts passenger demand, not crew. Vintages are cited inline. There is no published 30-year pilot forecast — the longest-horizon authoritative dataset is IATA's demand projection to 2050, from which future crew need can be inferred rather than read off directly.
Pilot demand by time horizon: 5, 10, 20 and 30 years
Air travel has grown faster than the wider economy for decades, and the major forecasters expect that to continue at a gradually maturing pace. The table sets the pilot-demand outlook against the traffic and fleet numbers that drive it, at each horizon the industry actually publishes to.

Captain demand vs First Officer demand
The manufacturers forecast total pilots, not a Captain/First Officer split — and because every airliner is flown by a two-pilot crew, the raw number of seats in each rank is roughly equal. What differs is the mechanism that creates the vacancies, and that mechanism matters a great deal for anyone planning a career.
Captain demand is driven by the retirement wave. About two-thirds of the 674,000 pilots Boeing forecasts over 20 years replace crews leaving the profession, and the mandatory retirement age of 65 in most states means those departures land on the most senior seats first — the left seat. Airlines rarely hire commanders off the street; they promote from within. So each Captain retirement typically creates a command upgrade for a serving First Officer.
First Officer demand is the entry valve. Every upgrade to command opens a right-seat vacancy at the bottom of the airline, which is where most new-entrant pilots — cadets, instructors and pilots converting from other sectors — actually join. In other words, Captain demand is the pull that sets the progression in motion, and First Officer hiring is the point where the profession absorbs its newcomers. The two are linked: a strong Captain retirement cycle feeds First Officer recruitment one rung below.
Two things distort the neat 1:1 picture. First, command timelines vary enormously by operator — from two to five years at many low-cost carriers, eight to fifteen at legacy network airlines, five to fifteen at the US majors, and effectively immediate for Direct-Entry Captains at fast-growing Gulf and Asian carriers. Widebody vs narrowbody
The single biggest determinant of where the jobs are is aircraft size. The market is overwhelmingly a narrowbody one, and it is becoming more so.

The practical takeaway for a career: the narrowbody types carry most of the vacancies and the fastest route to a command, which is why they are the most common first airline job. Widebody flying is where many pilots aim later, but it is a smaller market with tougher entry bars. Airline (scheduled passenger) outlook
The scheduled passenger business is the engine of pilot demand. Boeing and IATA both expect passenger traffic to double over the next 20 years, growing about 3.8% a year to 2043 and then moderating toward 3.1% a year to 2050 as large markets mature — a slowdown that reflects saturation, not weakness, since absolute passenger numbers keep climbing. IATA recorded roughly 5.2 billion passengers in 2025 and airline revenue above US$1 trillion for the first time.
Growth is heavily weighted toward emerging markets. IATA projects Asia-Pacific to lead at about 5.1% a year, with the Middle East near 3.9% and Africa growing fast, while mature Europe and North America grow more slowly at 2.3–2.8%. Boeing likewise sees Eurasia and China taking the largest share of new personnel and South and Southeast Asia posting the fastest workforce growth. Low-cost carriers, which fly mostly narrowbodies, are expected to make up more than 40% of the global fleet by the mid-2040s. Cargo & freighter outlook
Air cargo is a structurally growing, largely widebody corner of the market. Boeing expects air cargo traffic to roughly double over 20 years, growing about 3.7–4% a year — faster than trade or the wider economy — driven by cross-border e-commerce and shifting supply chains. The dedicated freighter fleet is forecast to grow about two-thirds, from 2,340 aircraft in 2023 to 3,900 by 2043, with the large widebody freighter fleet nearly doubling. Boeing's 2026 outlook calls for more than 2,900 production and converted freighters over the period.
A useful piece of context for pilots: dedicated freighters are only about 8% of the commercial fleet, yet they carry more than half of all air cargo, with passenger aircraft carrying the rest as belly freight. Express operators — the integrators behind e-commerce — are forecast to handle around a quarter of the market by 2043, up from about 18%. Business aviation outlook
Business aviation is a separate market that the big airline pilot forecasts deliberately exclude — so its pilot demand sits on top of the 674,000 commercial figure. Honeywell's 2025 Global Business Aviation Outlook, its 34th, forecasts a record 8,500 new business jets worth about US$283 billion over the next decade, with deliveries in 2026 up 5% on 2025 and growth averaging about 3% a year. North America dominates, holding 62% of the global business fleet and expected to take roughly 70% of new deliveries over the next three years, with fractional ownership and tax incentives among the drivers.
On the crewing side, CAE projects 33,000 new business-aviation pilots over the decade, mostly to replace retirements and keep the sector on its growth path — part of 102,000 new business-aviation professionals overall. Aircraft orders, backlog & what paces hiring
Pilot demand ultimately tracks the fleet, and the fleet tracks aircraft orders. Boeing's 2026 Commercial Market Outlook forecasts nearly 44,000 new commercial aircraft between 2026 and 2045 — about 33,545 single-aisle, 7,715 widebody, 1,435 regional and 930 new-production freighters — with the global fleet growing about 80% to more than 50,000 aircraft. Airbus's 2026 Global Market Forecast is closely aligned at 42,060 new passenger jets, with the passenger fleet rising from 23,310 at the end of 2025 to 45,550 by 2045. Both put roughly half of all deliveries as replacements of older, less efficient aircraft rather than net additions.
The near-term caveat is delivery, not demand. Oliver Wyman's 2025 fleet forecast put the order backlog at a record ~17,000 aircraft and estimated it would take around 14 years for supply and demand to reconcile at current production rates, with supply-chain constraints and engine-durability issues slowing hand-overs. Because airlines crew aircraft as they arrive, that backlog is one reason hiring in some mature markets has been steadier and less explosive than the 20-year totals alone might suggest — the long-run need is intact, but the delivery of it is being smoothed out over time.
